Guidebook Yountville

Location/Region: The city of Yountville, only one mile long, is situated in the heart of the Napa Valley. Located along the 26-mile route from Napa to Calistoga, Yountville’s nearest neighbors include the towns of Rutherford, Oakville and St. Helena, all to the north, with Napa directly south. Yountville is an approximate 90-minute drive from San Francisco (about 75 miles) and about one hour from the Oakland Airport (about 50 miles).

Climate: The Napa Valley is best described as a so-called Mediterranean climate, boasting moderate temperatures year round. Yountville enjoys one of the most distinctive of California’s climates as it is influenced by its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and rugged mountain ranges that run parallel to the coastline, creating a unique microclimate. On average, temperatures are generally mild, with most rainfall occurring in the winter months and warmer temperatures in the summer months.

Population: About 3,000

Welcome to Yountville

Area History: Founded in 1855 by George C. Yount, Yountville, originally named “Sebastapol,” was given its present name in Yount’s honor in 1866. From 1841 when Yount produced his first wine to 1973 with the establishment of Domaine Chandon, the area has grown to become one of the world’s premier wine producing regions. In the last two decades, Yountville has produced a large percentage of noted Napa Valley wines and has become a destination for some of the finest restaurants in the country.

Cultural info/Current info: Best known for its country charm and cosmopolitan luxuries, Yountville is a charming walking town, surrounded by rolling foothills and rich countrysides. Everything in Yountville is savored, whether it be time with friends on a stroll through town, enjoying sunny skies while eating lunch on a patio, or conversation over a glass of wine at one of the notable wineries and restaurants that have put Yountville on the map as one of Napa Valley’s finest regions.

What to see and do: There is always something wonderful to do in Yountville, and September is specifically great because it is the harvest season. In addition, Yountville hosts a variety of activities throughout the year, including the Taste of Yountville in March, The Father's Day Auto Show, the Yountville Days Parade in October, the Festival of Lights in December and the quarterly Taste of Yountville cooking events.

Tips on visiting: Temperatures are great year-round, with summer and fall being very pleasant with mild temperatures, turning leaves and an All-American feel.

State/Area Trivia and Interesting or Little Known Facts: Yountville is only 1.6 square miles. The town boasts more than 10 great restaurants and chefs, including the world-famous French Laundry. The town was the site of the first grape vine planting in the Napa Valley, and today boasts a score of wineries.
