Bellingham’s Holiday Port Festival Features Gingerbread House
Bellingham Gingerbread Contest
When pretzel sticks become window frames, icing
brings miniature stucco walls to life and gingerbread panels hold
the whole thing up – It’s time once again to make gingerbread houses
(and other edible creations) for the Holiday Port Gingerbread House
Contest in Bellingham. This free contest showcases edible structures
of all kinds – not just houses – and first place in each of the nine
categories will receive a prize.
Families and community groups have made a tradition out of entering
the event’s gingerbread house contest every year. It allows bakers
of all ages and abilities to let their creativity shine – and maybe
even win a prize. Over the years, everything from the Washington
State Capital building to Whatcom Middle School have been recreated
in gingerbread and other edible materials. Many of the entries are
donated to a silent auction, with proceeds benefiting the Mount
Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross.
All gingerbread contest entries will be on display during
Bellingham’s 21st Annual Holiday Port Festival Dec. 2-4. This
family-friendly event will feature performances from local bands,
choirs and dance troupes, along with fire truck rides, horse-drawn
wagon rides, art activities for children, Santa Claus, and the
gingerbread house display, all at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal.
With so many free activities for kids, many families choose to spend
the weekend at the Holiday Port Festival.
