Discover, Learn and Explore at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center

(West Yellowstone, Montana)

The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, located in West Yellowstone, Montana is a not-for-profit, AZA Accredited facility dedicated to providing visitors to the Yellowstone area an opportunity to learn about, view and ultimately appreciate the grizzly bear and gray wolf.

The core of the GWDC's effort is to empower visitors with knowledge about grizzlies and wolves through educational programs. While visitors can spend the majority of their time watching these fascinating animals, the Center also offers; Keeper Kids (kids help hide food for the bears), Jr. Tracker Program (Radio track and study a model hibernating bear), live Bird-of-Prey demonstrations, Safety in Bear Country, Living With Bears (meet Jewel, a Karelian Bear Dog), Yellowstone Park Ranger talks, movies and a world-class exhibit, Bears: Imagination and Reality.

Grizzlies at play

The grizzly bears that reside at the GWDC are animals unable to live in the wild for different reasons. Many were orphaned in the wild and rescued from certain death.

Others had become nuisance bears and were destined for destruction.

These animals have a second chance the Center and, by helping with the education of visitors, their lives may help other bears remain in the wild.

The wolves were a captive-born, unplanned litter and cannot be released into the wild. The GWDC agreed to take individual pups from four different litters, including a yearling female who acted as the surrogate mother.

These wolves were given the opportunity to develop strong social ties and have since formed a cohesive pack.

No visit to the Yellowstone area is complete without exploring the intriguing worlds of the bears and wolves at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center.

Wolves being social

The Center is open 365 days a year (GWDC bears do not hibernate).
