‘THE SPRINGS RESORT’ in PAGOSA SPRINGS, COLORADO
HEALING WATERS… AND…. HIGH
ALTITUDE GOLF! by Paula Miser
(Pagosa Springs, Colorado)
Billowy steam rises each
morning from the banks of the San Juan River as it gently
flows through the heart of Pagosa Springs, Colorado---a 60
minute scenic drive east of Durango. A comforting aura
surrounds visitors as they make their way to the 17
individually temperatured soaking pools terraced along the
river’s banks. The acoustics of the river and the serenity
of the travelers slipping into the warm, curative waters generate an anticipation of
relaxation, rejuvenation, and reward. Add 27 holes of
Championship mountain and Scottish links golf and you have
one of the most unique recreational experiences available in
the State.
Imagine playing a round of golf at
7700 feet of elevation (where upwards of 20% more ball flight is
possible in the thin mountain air) and then relaxing and preparing
for the next day’s round while soaking in 17 individual “naturally
hot therapeutic mineral water” pools terracing along the banks of
the San Juan River.
This ancient ritual of a
healing soak is the foundation for the existence of this
small but vibrant mountain town at the base of Wolf Creek
Pass. Pagosa means “healing water” in the ancient Ute
language and the power of the waters is legendary in Native
American lore. The spring is the world’s largest and deepest
hot mineral spring.
While the first visitors to this
world-famous spring had to make their own soaking pools in
the bank of the river, today’s travelers simply enter
through the welcoming doors of The Springs Resort bathhouse
and choose which landscaped soaking pool meets their fancy.
The
Mediterranean-style bathhouse welcomes soakers to a uniquely
configured, immaculately maintained facility, providing
changing rooms, thick towels, spa robes and friendly
attendants.
The soaking pools are filled with the
constantly flowing, warm mineral-rich waters of the ancient spring.
This constant flow in and out of the pools provides for a
chemical-free, immaculate soaking experience. Each pool is
completely drained and scrubbed three times a week, adding to the
spotless reputation of this state-of-the- art facility. The flowing
water out of the pools provides streams and waterfalls throughout
the property and even supplies “Golden Pond”, the Koi fish pool with
warm (approximately 86º F.) mineral water which the popular fish
thrive on. The oft-photographed sunken bridge across Golden Pond
provides unique access to “The Cliffs” pool which sits perched in
the bank above the pond.
To add to the resort’s
unforgettable experience, massage therapy, body treatments,
an organic juice bar/cafe, hair/nail/skin salon, and retail
shops tempt guests as they make their way to the steamy,
curative pools. Names like “Paradise”, “Tranquility”, and
“Lobster Pot” lure soakers to the individual pool that suits
their soaking preference. Abundant patio furnishings provide
sitting areas among the pools for picnicking, reading, or
sun-napping. Two pools actually mix directly with the cool
mountain river water, allowing an icy plunge before moving
on to a different soaking experience.
The Springs Resort offers the best
golf package around, including 18 holes, cart, new extra long golf
tees, resort accommodations, unlimited hot springs access, and a
special welcome golf gift. Non-golfers can save on lodging and soak
free when accompanying a golfer on a package.
Pampering massages and body
treatments, spa manicures and pedicures, hair styling, and facials
are all available at the Healing Waters Spa & Salon. Other
recreational opportunities abound from hiking, rafting, history and
archeological tours, narrow gauge trains, theatres, galleries and
shopping.
