Southwest Alaska Rich in History, Diversity

Alaska’s expansive Southwest region is home to the communities of Bethel, King Salmon, Unalaska, Dillingham, Kodiak and the Pribilof Islands. The area is as diverse as it is big.

Unalaska, located on the Aleutian Island chain, is home to Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Ascension and the Bishop's House. The church hosts one of the largest collections of religious artifacts and icons in the United States.

Kodiak Island, known primarily for its mammoth brown bears, boasts many cultural attractions in addition to housing one of the world’s most legendary mammals. The Baranov Museum, a warehouse built in the 1790s by Alexander Baranof to store furs, is the oldest remaining Russian structure in the state. Kodiak is also rich with Alaska Native culture. The Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository reveal 8,000 years of Alutiiq history through artifacts and archeological digs. A new archaeological excavation gets underway every summer and volunteers are invited to participate.

Culture in Alaska is vast and varied as the land itself. The true cultural traveler could spend a lifetime in the state and never experience it all.

The Bakersfield Sound

The Country Music Capital of the West Coast...Nashville West, whatever you want to call it, Bakersfield is home to a musical legacy unlike any other city. Bakersfield's own Buck Owens and Merle Haggard made the Bakersfield Sound, a product of dust bowl migrants, famous in the 1950's. The sound continues to thrive with artists such as Dwight Yoakam and Brad Paisley carrying on the musical style of their predecessors. The total Bakersfield Sound experience includes: a live show at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace, a historical look at the music roots of Bakersfield at the Kern County Museum and a night spent dancing away at one of the last true honkytonks, Trout's in Oildale.

The Crystal Palace

Completed in 1996, the country music venue is the proud creation of country music legend Buck Owens. Many of today's biggest stars interrupt world tours to play the intimate 550-seat nightclub, museum, and restaurant. The venue has been nominated for "Nightclub of the Year" eight times by the Academy of Country Music®, winning the award three times (1997, 2004, 2006). Until his passing in 2006, Owens would perform each weekend to fans that came from across the country to pay homage to the star. In 2005 country superstar Garth Brooks proposed to then girlfriend and country singer Trisha Yearwood on the Palace stage. In addition, the Palace is home to a career's worth of memorabilia from Owens' early days to his time as co-host of the TV show Hee-Haw and the final years as a living legend.

Nature Vacations in Alabama

As the vacation experience evolves, families no longer want to spend all week basking in the summer sun on the beach. Nature-based tourism (also referred to as ecotourism or recreation-based tourism) is emerging as a popular vacation activity for many visiting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach as individuals seek out undistributed natural resources and unique outdoor activities.

Some individuals prefer consumptive activities such as hunting or fishing while others choose nonconsumptive activities like bird watching or canoeing. Regardless of their preference, nature-based tourism results in increased environmental awareness while also satisfying the adventure-seeker or enabling others to reconnect with their families/friends or themselves.

The Alabama’s coastal landscape offers four diverse ecosystems, all uniquely located within one area. These ecosystems include an ancient maritime live oak forest, wet longleaf pine savanna, fresh water marsh and small stream swamp forest. Several rare species call coastal Alabama home, such as the white topped pitcher plant, gopher tortoise, eastern diamond back rattlesnake and red-cockaded woodpecker.

Alabama ranks 4th in the nation for its diverse environment, including over 80 vertebrate animal species and 3,400 plant species that thrive in more than 280 ecosystems throughout the state.
