Village of Merrick Park Celebrates Man's Best Friend with The Doggy Days of Summer Event Series

The Bow Wow Begins Sunday, July 11th

Village of Merrick Park knows it’s a dogs world out there. What better way to kick off summer, than with The Doggy Days of Summer event series. The series kicks off on Sunday, July 11th with a Pooch-A-Palooza of doggy centric action including a dog parade in The Garden. Proud dog owners will be able to show off their beloved furry friends and three winners will be selected to receive various prizes. Every dog that signs up to participate in the parade will also receive a doggy bandana to wear. Dog owners will be charged a $5 participation fee to enter the parade; all proceeds will be donated to the Humane Society of Greater Miami. The kick-off event will also feature an Adopt-a-Thon, where guests will be able to meet, greet and adopt dogs brought in by The Humane Society of Greater Miami. Representatives from The Humane Society will be on hand to help facilitate adoptions.

This event series will continue every Sunday in July as dog owners are invited to have their pooches strike a pose for a take-home framed photo with any $25 purchase within the center. Additionally, guests will enjoy special treats and in-store promotions from participating restaurants and shops. Guests are encouraged to bring along their dogs and dine al fresco at one of Village of Merrick Park’s many dog-friendly restaurants. www.villageofmerrickpark.com for more info.

Combining Traditional Colorado Vacations with Outdoor Volunteer and Learning Programs

Outdoor volunteer vacations and learning vacations are becoming increasingly popular in Colorado. From mountain bike trail building to archeological excavation classes, Colorado offers visitors the chance to give back while enjoying a healthy outdoor vacation experience. Some hotels even offer reduced rates in exchange for volunteer service.

Below are a few organizations that provide Colorado voluntourism opportunities and learning vacations.

•Give and Getaway at RockResorts: RockResorts properties and participating hotels in Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, and Aspen are offering travelers the opportunity to positively impact the local environment and enjoy a vacation at the same time. A local team at each resort will arrange an environmental conservation project for visitors, such as light trail maintenance.  For more information visit the RockResorts

•Pick Your Volunteer Experience: Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) provides hands-on opportunities for participants to enhance, protect and sustain Colorado’s natural resources. The organization offers more than 40 exciting opportunities from April through October 2010 to help renew and restore Colorado's most treasured natural places.  Visit the Project Calendar on www.voc.org

•‘Dig’ Archeology in Southwest Colorado: The 170-acre Crow Canyon Archaeological Center outside Cortez, Colorado is a great place to get your dig on. This unique facility nestled in a canyon and shadowed by the massive 13,000-foot peaks of the La Plata Mountains allows visitors to learn about this ancient culture by letting them feel the excitement of uncovering a 1,000-year-old tool.  Visit www.crowcanyon.org for more information.

Sheridan, Wyoming

Cowboy Up at the Sheridan WYO Rodeo!

In 1931, the small town of Sheridan, Wyoming, was so quiet you could “shoot a shotgun down Main Street and have no fear of injuring anyone.” A group of local citizens wanted to do something about the situation and decided to put on a rodeo. They set their sights high and organized a first class professional rodeo.

After 80 years in the making, the WYO Rodeo has put Sheridan on the map. Voted the original ‘#1 Western Town in America’, Sheridan has flourished into a Mecca of cowboy culture – and it’s not just about the rodeo anymore. During rodeo week, July 9 – 18, travelers can expect the streets to be filled with thousands gathering to get a real taste of the Old West. Yes, people come from all over the nation to see the best cowboys and cowgirls compete in events such as bull riding, bronc riding, barrel racing, trick riding, bareback racing and the World Champion Indian Relay Races. The parade, barbecues, carnival and street dances also really brings life to one of Wyoming’s biggest celebrations

Visitors can kick off their boots . . . literally. Take the family out on the town for live music on the first weekend and see just how far you can kick off your boots for prizes and bragging rights.

The Sheridan WYO Rodeo has been virtually sold out the last four years and demand for tickets is at an all time high with a record setting attendance in 2009. Travelers wishing to saddle up and visit this epic Wyoming hoe-down would be wise to book early. Sheridan offers numerous accommodations from economical to luxury.
