Gray Whale Season Celebrated
Whales migrate through Dana Point through April

Gray Whales 2007 Andre Torng Photography

Majestic Gray Whales migrate south every year through Dana Point until the end of April and Dana Wharf offers daily trips to view and learn about the creatures as they journey towards the waters of Mexico. Dana Wharf, the originator of Whale Watching in South Orange County, offers a 2-hour whale watching cruise that provides the chance to see these beautiful creatures as well as large pods of dolphin, sea lions, birds and other exciting marine life. Excursions depart at 10am, noon and 2pm daily. Blue Whales continue to move through Dana Point so there’s still a chance to see the largest mammal on earth on one of the trips, as well.

During migration, gray whales of this eastern Pacific population can be seen swimming offshore (3-6 mph on average) with the naked eye or binoculars. But to get close enough for a whiff of their blow mist, you need a boat.

Dana Wharf is preparing to celebrate its 40 year anniversary as the original, family-owned and operated whale watching landing in South Orange County.

Carlsbad, New Mexico

Carlsbad’s Holiday Light Show Floats into 19th Season

The dark river, usually illuminated by only the stars and moon, reflects each December what has become one of New Mexico’s grandest holiday light shows, Christmas on the Pecos in Carlsbad. The 19th season runs November 26-December 31, 2010, excluding December 24, 2010.

Bundled up against the winter chill, you stare in fascination as your boat glides through a fairyland of twinkling lights created by more than 100 Pecos River homeowners and corporate sponsors who spend hours creatively decorating backyards and boat docks with millions of lights.

Christmas on the Pecos River Boat tours are 40 minutes long. Boats set sail 12-15 times each night between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tours depart from the Pecos River Village, a quaint, turn-of-the-century park, located at 711 Muscatel, that is transformed into a wonderland of sparkling lights and delights.

Tickets are sold in advance and at the ticket office on days of departure. Space is limited and reservations are strongly suggested especially on the weekends and as we get closer to Christmas. Be sure to wear warm clothing (layers are best). Blankets are provided by Washington Tru Solutions.

Christmas on the Pecos River has been awarded one of the top 100 "must see" events in North America by the American Bus Association 14 years in a row since 1996

Holiday Festivals in December

After decorating with lights, wreaths, garland and snow, Maine's city downtowns and village centers are ready to celebrate the Christmas season. Holiday festivals last a weekend, week or more, and provide activities and entertainment for all ages.

Kennebunkport was named the #2 Christmas Town in America by HGTV, and Christmas Prelude, happening Dec. 2-12, is the town's rousing holiday celebration. The fun spills into neighboring Kennebunk and Cape Porpoise, with shopping specials, public suppers, caroling and live music, arts and crafts fairs, a historic walking tour, tree lightings, and the arrival of Santa Claus by lobster boat.

The village of Bethel draws out its biggest holiday event for nearly a month. This year Country Christmas in Bethel takes place Nov. 26 – Dec. 24. There's a craft and wares fair, free wagon rides through the village, menu samples from area chefs at the Taste of Bethel, a theme wreath auction, historic open houses, shopping specials, and a living nativity.

After picking apples in the fall, Mainers and visitors seek out a different type of tree for a different kind of picking in December. Visiting a Christmas tree farm to cut the family tree is a fun tradition. More than 50 family tree farms offer choose-and-cut balsam, fraser or Douglas-fir trees, along with pre-cut trees and handmade wreaths, garland, kissing balls or center pieces. Take a wagon ride to the field of trees, and enjoy free hot apple cider or hot chocolate, cookies and candy canes. Most farms charge one price for a tree of any size, from five to 15 feet.
