Location/Region: Gunnison
County, southwestern Colorado
Geographical description: 7,700 feet in elevation,
alpine, meadow land and high mesa desert
Climate: Summer temps: 80s highs, mid-40s for lows.
Winter: Teens for highs, 10 below zero (average) lows
Population: 13,000 for the county
Area History: Gold, silver and coal Mining
settled the Gunnison Valley, ranching them imerged as the main stay for
residents. Western State College was established in 1900.
Cultural info: Many cultural events held throughout the year,
both historical and arts related.
What to see and do: Gunnison County is 85% public use land, which
means we are a recreation mecca with hiking, biking, 4-wheel drives and
2000 miles of trout streams. We also have Curecanti National Recreation
Area which is the largest lake in the state and the Black Canyon
National Park. In the winter we have skiing at Crested Butte Mountain
Resort and miles of Nordic trails along with maintained snowmobile
trails.
